Greg & Jeanine Childs

Greg & Jeanine Childs

Past Owners (1990 - 2016)

Greg and Jeanine Childs care about people and their needs, and had dedicated their lives to the service of others. They had been entrusted with the high privilege of directing the day-to-day operations of the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home since January 1, 1990. And although they owned and operated the firm, they have always felt like the Sheets & Childs institution belonged more to the tri-county community than to them.

C. Gregory Childs is a native of Delaware County, and grew up in the rural community of Gaston, where his parents owned and operated a lumber and hardware company that was founded by his maternal grandfather in 1939. He graduated from Wes-Del High School, earned a bachelor’s degree from Taylor University in Upland, and did additional graduate study in music at Ball State University. While he was a university student, he worked part-time for a local funeral home, and graduated from the Indiana College of Mortuary Science in 1975. He worked for eleven years as an embalmer and funeral director for two mortuaries in central Indiana, before moving to Churubusco and becoming associated with Sheets Funeral Home on June 1, 1986.

In addition to his business endeavors, Greg is a member of the Churubusco United Methodist Church, where he also serves as the organist, performs as a frequent vocal soloist for the church’s popular Hanging of the Greens program, and has been the church’s delegate to the United Methodist Indiana Conference on a variety of occasions. He is a former trustee and past president of the Churubusco Public Library, past president and board of directors member of both the Churubusco Chamber of Commerce and Churubusco Lions Club, and serves as a consultant for the Eel River Cemetery Association. Music is his avocation, and he is a member of the Fort Wayne Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, has sung for several seasons with the Fort Wayne Bach Collegium, and is past president of the Epworth Forest Choir School.  He is a member of the National Funeral Director’s Association and also serves as the secretary-treasurer of the Indiana Funeral Director's Association.

Jeanine Childs grew up in a United Methodist parsonage, and spent her formative years in central Indiana. She graduated from Elwood High School, and received her bachelor and master’s degrees from Ball State University. She is a licensed mental health counselor, did extensive graduate study at the Adler Institute of Psychology in Chicago, earned a certificate in biblical studies from the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, and holds a Ph.D in psychology from the Institute Of Transpersonal Psychology in Palo Alto, California. In addition to her involvement at the funeral home and in church and community affairs, Dr. Childs has served as an adjunct professor of psychology in Fort Wayne, and currently works as a clinical mental health counselor.

Greg and Jeanine have been blessed with three sons. Drew and his wife Becca live in Avon, and he teaches vocal music at Decatur Central High School in Indianapolis.  He recently completed his master’s in education at Ball State University.  Perry  graduated with a degree in business from Anderson University, where he excelled in cross country and track, and was active in the university’s “Neighbors” outreach ministry.  He is currently employed as a computer technician with the AME Group in Fort Wayne.  He is also active in his church, the 509 Community in Huntington, and is the sound technician for the band James and the Drifters.   Joel  graduated from Anderson University in 2008 with a B.
