Rodney A. Hughes, 61, a resident of Churubusco, and formerly of New Haven, passed away Sunday afternoon, May 14, 2017, in the emergency room at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne after collapsing unexpectedly shortly before.

Mr. Hughes was born in Syracuse on July 24, 1955, a son of Larry and Betty Jean Hughes. He spent his formative years in Fort Wayne and Syracuse.

As a young man he served with the U.S. Navy, and for the past 20 years had worked for a driver for Salesman & Son Trucking in Churubusco.

A fun loving man, he enjoyed NASCAR and was a fan of Dale Earnhart, Jr. He will be truly missed.

The surviving relatives include his fiance Kim Romines of Churubusco; six step-children; 11 grandchildren including Deidra (Danny) Turner and Virgil Newby, Jr., both of Killeen, Tx., and DaCoda Hughes of Staten Island, NY; two great-grandchildren; ; two sisters-in-law Jill (Brian) Gardner of Monroeville and Kelly Patty of Fort Wayne; a brother-in-law Dave Patty of Fort Wayne; and his fiance's mother Madonna Patty of Fort Wayne.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter Alicia Newby in 2011.

Memorial services with military rites will be held at 6 p. m. on Monday, May 22, 2017, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Pastor Diane Elwood, officiating.

The family will receive friends after 4 p.m. Monday until the time of the service.
